damp proof membrane for weed clearance

Going to be clearing my second allotment next week. It has 4ft high weeds. Going to cut down the weeds and was planning on covering with damp proof membrane. Seen some blue 1000 guage in wickes so hoping that would do the trick. Then I will leave it over winter. Plant up my existing allotment and slowly peel back and work on the second allotment as I have things to plant into it.

Sounds ok?

No, you want to use a permiable weed membrane. A damp proof membrane is exactly that!

No idea how 1000 gauge plastic compares price-wise, but you want Mypex, Phormisol or a good quality equivalent, which will breathe and let moisture through.
  • I wont be leaving it down, just instead of carpet to kill off the weeds. weed membrane will disintergrate in the sun unless I put things over it.

    No, proper stuff won't.

I've had Phormisol down and walked over it every day for 5 years, then re-used! :D

I think you are confusing what was suggested with the cheap stuff. Mypex and Phormisol are used throughout the industry as flooring for commercial polytunnels, so they are UV stabilised.

The black stuff works much better than the blue. Lets a lot less light through.

I have patches that i covered and it worked very well. I did have brambles to the rear of my plot and someof those managed to break through.

But it did kill a lot of weeds off.
