Student grant towards accomodation?

Hi

I am looking for some advice if there is any help in thisarea?
I have a daughter aged 17. She started full-time education afew weeks ago. She lives with her gran which is near her college.

They haven’t been getting along and I live quite far fromwhere her college is, so her coming to live with me isn’t a viable option.

Is there any grant or assistance my daughter could claim to partlysubsidise towards rented accommodation?

Is student loan the only option?

As far as I am aware a student loan wouldn't be available to anyone under the age of 18, as it is a contract that needs to be signed, and it is only available for HE (Higher Education), if your daughter is at college it is very likely she will only be studying at a FE (Further Education) level.

    Sorry I couldn't be more help -

Have you tried calling the college to see if they have a pastoral care team, who may be able to help?

I there no hope that there could be some kind of mediation between her and her Grandma? What is the issue - it it big, and going to get bigger, or could it be classed at 'teething' problems?

Is there a college closer to your home that she could enroll at? (One that would let her start at this tine of year)?

Could she maybe stay part time at her Grandmothers - for example I am not in on Fridays, and Mondays, so could stay long weekends at my mothers if |I didn't have my own place?

Have a look at turn 2 us - there may be grants available to you, but as they can be hugely specific you would need to go through the forms, and have a lolok. (some are only available to people who lived or were born in certain towns, or whose fathers were fishermen - they can be really strict).

    Hi

Many thanks for your reply. I'll look into what you said.

Hopefully she can patch it up with her gran. Though just trying to explore options at the moment.

I received a bursary when I was at college (left five years ago now - eeek!) which paid towards my rent for private accommodation because my parents lived more than 15 miles from my college and I couldn't study my chosen subjects any closer to home. It was means tested and I don't know if it was a national scheme as I went to college in a very rural area and as such there were extra initiatives to try and help us attend. HTH
