Repointing end gable of house

Hi. I am new here so apologies if this is in the wrong forum or otherwise off-topic

I have an end terrace in Liverpool L15 and there is damp on the internal walls of the gable end - it has a new DPC so it seems pretty clear that it is coming in through the wall. The pointing is poor and the brick fairly old so it may be porous.

I need to get the poor mortar raked out, the whole wall re-pointed and then some kind of waterproofing sealant applied. I guesstimate that the wall is 10m long and up to 6.5m high at the apex so a total surface area of about 60sq metres

I would really appreciate any references and/or guidance on what is a fair price for this work and the important point to ensure that this is not a cost I have to incur twice as it is going to be painful financially anyway.

thankyou!

At that height do you think you'll need scaffolding? The mortaring isn't that expensive, it's just time consuming so perhaps 1-2 days labour but if you need a scaffold that will add a lot more (say £300 at least I'd think).

    too many comps..not enough time!
  • How long ago was the DPC done? It might just a case of waiting for the wall to dry out if the DPC was the only fault. Is the outside of the wall noticeably damp when you look at it? No leaky guttering or anything else causing it rather than the pointing?
  • Thanks for the responses so far. The DPC was almost 2 years ago and the damp areas are at head height and above.

It is the end gable wall so no gutters and it does get the weather when it rains so with driven rain it is hitting the wall direct.

Yes, you are right, we would need scaffold. Do you really think they could rake out and repoint that sort of area in 2 days labour. I was thinking it would be more like 6 days but that is just a guess.

Would a quote of around 1800-2000 seem reasonable or high - to include scaffold, raking out, re-pointing, apply clear sealant, clean site?

I've had a bit of my gable end done so I was going off that, although it wasn't all of it. I may be being too optimistic because ours didn't take long, although of course it was only smaller patches.

I think it depends on how long it will take, like you say. Perhaps get a few quotes and ask how long. That price sounds ok ish for 6 days labour and scaffolding, but if it's less than that I think it's a bit high.
