Maths GCSE Study

After acting as a private tutor to get my son through his GCSE maths I'd quite like to take it myself. Things have been a bit stressy lately so I didn't apply through my local adult education system. I can't study at night as I have no child care (can't leave my two alone), and there is only one local daytime course that is full.

So I'm going to have to study it on my own (can't afford an online course, money is extremely stretched).

Has anyone here done this recently and how expensive is it to take the exam at a local school.., and how do you book a place?

My local college only does BTECs would you believe so that isn't an option.

  • Would the open university do this level? I did a maths access type course with the OU before I did my degree to get back into the swing of things.

Because I got tax credits my course was free.

You can go to your local adult learning centre and get Numeracy Level 2 - it is the equivalent of a GCSE in maths, and if you're on a low income it can even be free. ITs all online, so can either do at home or at the centre (whatever is easiest for you) and my local one even opens saturday mornings.

Might be worth giving the careers service (not a clue what they are called nowadays - used to be next step, might be national careers service now) a ring to get some advice on it from those in the know.

I have my level 2 in it and it was surprisingly easy.
  • http://www.edexcel.com/i-am-a/student/private-candidates/Pages/default.aspx will give you an idea of how to find somewhere to take the exam. It's up to the individual school/college what they charge so it could be anything from £30 - £100. Worth shopping around if you can. There are some free courses online though not necessarily GSCE - try http://alison.com/learn/ for example

I'd rather do a GCSE not an equivalent course (as I'd hate to apply for a course and find I couldn't do it because they don't accept the 'maths equivalent'. I actually already have a degree so won't qualify for most assistance even though I am on benefits I believe.., but I don't have maths GCSE so that will stop me doing a lot of courses that will enable me to get a job lol.

I have already looked at OU.., and its quite expensive if u already have a degree - I was quite horrified at how restricted their 'help' was lol.
