First Credit Card

Options
Need some help as to which first time credit card I should apply for.

Bit of background, I'm 24 and work full time, still live at home and have no debts (except student loan.) or defaulted on any payments ever. My current account is with Barclays.

I'm mostly going to be using the credit card to build up some credit history. I will pay it off in full every month.

What would be a good starter credit card? My mum has a Tesco credit card which rewards you with clubcard points but I'm not sure what else is out there in terms of credit cards with better sorts of rewards?

Thanks :D

  • The Tesco card may be out of your reach, although one application may not be the end of the world.

I'd advise trying your own bank in the first instance, and if you are rejected there, try someone like aqua or vanquis.

My son (20) was after doing the same to build up a credit record. We tried the fluid card first but that came back at low probability after the soft search. Worth trying the soft search though.
In the end he applied for a Capital One card, nothing fancy with a £200 limit. He's putting his fuel on it then paying off at the end of the month.

Not sure he quite understood my financial lesson though when he announced as he was only using it for fuel he may as well just leave it in the car

  • Do a soft search first. Because you have never had any credit before it will be hard for you to get a card as good as the Tesco one. My mum has an excellent credit history but got rejected for it. I would do a soft search and then see what your options are.

Your mum got turned down for the card due to her failing Tesco credit scoring so in reality she hasn't got an excellent credit history.

Not necessarily a less than excellent credit history, the CC company could believe that she has too much available credit for her salary or all sorts of other reasons, even though on paper has paid on time, every other CC, loan, store card etc in her entire life, and managed every credit account well.

Which means if available credit is used in credit scoring then the mother would of failed hence why the lender doesn't think she has an excellent history.

I've said before never missing a payment and years of credit history doesn't always bank you a new line of credit.

My first was a Vanquis - I got it in 2010, so when I was 22. Primarily because this was only company that would accept me. I did try elsewhere.

So with a 39.9% APR I made sure I paid off in full, unless interest was daft few quid and I could not afford balance that month.

After using this card I got accepted for few store cards, because of perks of been a store card holder (Argos, New Look etc..)

Also got accepted for a few personal loans, Curry (through Creation) - interest free ones so bonus.

Then I got an ASDA card, with a 19.9& APR plus cashback - go for this in your circumstances. I am student and same age, I got accepted by Creation for this so go for ASDA.

As you're with Barclays, then it might be an idea to try for the Barclaycard Initial

I used this tool which was very helpful and I was accepted instantly for the platinum balance transfer with a good limit. I have been happy so far with the customer service and the my banking website is one of the easiest ive ever used, with lots of features to control your account. xx
