DIY newbie - repairing ceilings...

Hi,
I want to repair my small bathroom ceiling whis is peeing away and mould is seen on it. But how do I do this. I have looked at a couple of youtube clips but need confimation of what I need.

I understand I have to peel it all away first and then what? DO I clean it with bleach =- thats what it seems to say? WHat si best way of doing this?

ANd then there is some kind of putty I have to use?

Please can someone take me through the steps. Oh and do I need to take the light down or can I just work around that? I am not sure how that would come down anyway?

Thanks

  • Oh and one more thing if I may, I have in another room (utility room) the ceiling border falling down. Not sure what it is called...it's the like inward curved dado rail that goes around the ceiling.

How do I get this up again? Is it a matter of very strong glue? Thanks

Do you mean the ceiling paint or the ceiling itself?

Its called coving. Its normally stuck up with cove adhesive.

    Cheers

  • Sorry yes...its the ceiling paint that is all flaking away!

Oh yes...coving! That's it? So I just get some "coving adhesive"? Is tha\t what it is called in shop or will it be called something else?

    Thanks

Is the coving heavy ? Is it plaster ?? Yes it will be "coving adhesive" but which one.

Cheap polystyrene was in vogue a few years ago.
  • Having felt the coving at the rear it feels like wood so slightly heavy yes.
  • It's all very crumbly up there!

So it will be plaster . Just get the smallest tub avaiable . Hold coving up with a couple of small nails ( thats underneath the bottom edge NOT thru the coving) til adhesive dries.
  • Okay....I've just pulled the coving down....it's only on one side and about two meters long. The edge of it seems to be all crumbly and may have once been the sticky substance holding it up? Not sure. But its white and crumbly. I will crumble all that off and hoover all the mess up and hopefully be left with a plain coving length. So this adhesive? ....is it like a thick glue or a thin layer like sellotape?

    Thanks

  • Obviously plaster coving, stick back with coving cement or tile cement.Small nail under bottom edge to take the weight until cement dries , as advised. Bathroom ceiling looks like the problem is caused by lack of ventilation. Can't see any sign of an extractor or opening window. Artex is always a pain in Bathrooms. If you can afford it get it slimmed flat and paint with mould resistant SILK emulsion, ventilation ,or lack of it seems to be the cause.
