Nice Eon

Just gave Eon my meter readings for my bill and Eon have reduced my DD by £11 a month.


Must go on holiday more often as that is what caused Eon to think my usage overall has reduced. :rotfl:

    I would advise against letting Eon do this as winter is now approaching and you are likely to use much more gas/electricity in the next few months. A large debit in the middle of winter will lead to Eon wanting to put your direct debit up rather a lot!

    Eon tried the same thing with me a couple of years ago. They wanted to reduce my direct debit - in January - and I refused to let them. I was right. It was a very cold February and I soon started eating into the credit I'd built up.

    Come January or March they'll shove it up by the £11 you've had it dropped plus at least another £11 -£15 to pay your arrears. You'd be better off leaving it as it is and getting it reduced in the spring if you are still in credit. Their computers don't work it out over the year, they seem to do it in three or six month chunks so if you are happy for it to go up and down like a yo-yo go for it

    EDF just did the same to me. Don't really care though as the correct amount of money goes into the (interest earning) budget account and the randomly generated DD (giving 6% discount off the bill) comes out of it. Over the past several years it seems to have operated mainly in my favour so not complaining. At the beginning of summer they put the DD up by £50 for 2 months to claw back the underpayment but I am still running just in debit ;)

    The only reason I do DD is because of the DD discount.


    If there wasn't one I wouldn't pay by DD.


    My original DD was too high anyway. I am over £200 in credit at the moment.


    I prefer the money in my bank and not Eon's

    Completely, agree, would rather not pay by dd, but the discount is the swayer.
    I also would prefer to be in debit anytime, why let the energy company sit on your money when as long as you are disciplined and know you are in debt, put some money in a savings account and you get the benefit:)

    Hi NowRetired

    Our Monthly Direct Debit arrangements are spread over a 12 month period.

    The aim is to achieve as near as possible to a zero balance by the time of the Annual Review. To make sure accounts are on track for this, we review the payments each quarter.

    However, if necessary, we'll only recommend an automatic change twice in every 12 month period. This will be at the mid point and at the Annual Review.

    On the other two occasions, if a change is thought necessary, we'll advise only and leave it to the customer to decide whether or not to change.

    I suspect you're at the mid point in your current arrangement.

    Thought you might be interested in a new online tool we released recently so customers can adjust their Direct Debits themselves. It's called the 'Direct Debit Manager.'

    This allows you to change the monthly payments by up to 20 per cent up or down, provided the account is billed up to the latest meter readings. Or, up to 5 per cent up or down without readings.

    This gives you the ability to adjust payments if your circumstances change.

    Before completing the change, though, we'll let you know how much we anticipate the account will be in credit/debit by the time of the Annual Review if the change is confirmed but usage doesn't alter accordingly.

    It's called the 'Direct Debit Manager.'
    That is what I was playing around with and it was that that suggested my direct debit was to high.


    Even with my reduced DD and if I use the same amount of gas this winter as I used in the very cold winter last year or the year before, my spread sheet says I will be in credit by £10 next July.


    The direct debit manager says I will have a £0 balance.


    My electricity usage is constant over the year, only my gas increases because of the cold.

    Great to see you using our new Direct Debit Manager. Hope you found it of interest.

    Did you click on 'Energy Overview?' There are screens in this area that show how we've calculated the proposed amount.

    The numbers are taken from your account. They'll include things like amount of energy used last year, discounts, payments you're about to make and the current balance.

    Sometimes, the snapshot we take at any given time may differ a little from what you're expecting. If you keep an eye on the tool, though, you can make adjustments throughout the year if you believe your circumstances will be better served by decreasing/increasing the monthly payments.

    There's no limit on the number of times you can change the amount.

    Thanks for using the tool NowRetired. Let me know if you've any comments/criticisms. Will be happy to pass these on to the guys who designed the tool.
