redux, I searched online for the price "£137.50 and tax disc" and the only table I could find with that price for a 6 month tax disc was headed Alternative Fuel Car (Tc59). The tax disc on the car expired at the end of June this year so yes, it started before this April.

When you say "the previous rate for an ordinary car was that amount" does that include diesels? Also where can I find the rates for last year online?

Rates for petrol and diesel cars are identical, it just depends on emissions, or car age.

I can easily find 12 month VED rates for 2012-13 but not the 6 month one you presumably need. I suspect if you spend a bit of time Googling you'll find it though.

Having said that it sounds like Redux knows that the rate is a standard one...

I found a website page from March 2012 which mentioned the upcoming new rates, though like Ultrasonic's it was 12 months only.

But the 6 month rate is simply half that plus 10℅, so £250 implies £137.50

As the 6 month disc on the car run out on 30 June 2013, I would say it was bought in December 2012 and the rate then for a 6 month diesel disc at Band J was £137.50. Alternate fuel then was priced at £132.00. So you may be right and me wrong and worrying unnecessarily about it being filled up with "alternate fuel".
