Facebook behaving weirdly

I think I've done something to my FB settings, but I can't work out what I've done or how to get it back to normal, and am hoping someone can help. It's definitely a problem with my FB account not with my browser or computer, because other people logging on to FB on my computer get the normal settings, but I get the weird ones even when logging on with a different browser.

When I hover over a friend's name, I used to see two buttons - "Friends" with a tick, and "Message". Now the message button is missing, but there is another button to the left of the friends one that says "Following" with a tick. When I hover over the friends button, the usual menu appears, but the "show in news feed" item is missing, so I can't set that I want to see status updates but not games, for example, although from the way my news feed is behaving, it seems that things I've previously deselected still aren't showing.

Does anyone know what I must have done to make this happen and how I can put it back, please? I've tried googling about it for hours and can't find anything relevant.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
:)
