Forum RSS feed

Options
Hi.

I was wondering how I can get an RSS feed of the Matched Betting forum (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.php?f=41&styleid=33)?

I've tried the following http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/external.php?type=rss2&forumids=41 but it only produced one item. Any ideas?

If there are any alternatives available aside from RSS then please do let me know.

Thanks

From what I recall the feeds are limited to showing a certain maximum number of new threads and limited to a certain time scale.

e.g. max of 10 over the last 2 days? Not necessarily the correct figures there.

So if there has say only been 1 new thread in whatever time period it includes, the feed will only show 1.

Looking at http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&f=41&page=1&pp=20&sort=dateline&order=desc&daysprune=-1 Seems there have not been many new threads in the last few days?

There also seems to some glitching in the forum search this morning, that could also have a knock on effect.

  • Thanks kindly for your reply.

What's available is not what I looking for then as I would like to have an RSS / ATOM / other feed for all current posts, including those which have been updated i.e. the first x posts which have been updated or created including the content of the last thread entry.

It's probably a deliberate and justifiable design choice to force users to visit the site and hence be exposed to the advertising links, the primary revenue source for MSE I believe. Quite understandable.

    Thanks for your reply anyway.

No, it's just the way RSS feeds work with the Vbulletin software the forum runs on. No design choice by MSE at all. Other vBulletin based forums work the same way, and to change that behaviour would involve hacking/modifying the forum code itself.

  • Apologies for my false assumption. In that case I would like to offer a couple of 'nice to haves':

    1. RSS feed which includes last x posts in reverse chronological order (i.e. most recent first) that have either been updated or added. Ideally each RSS entry would also include say the last 10 thread entries for each post. The idea here is to minimise the need to navigate to view the content of a thread.

    2. Mobile interface. A stream-lined, specific and minimal HTML / CSS / JS etc. responsive mobile interface for reading forums, making new posts and replying to existing ones. The interface could include some advertising but it should not interfere with the usability of the site (i.e. no popups just header or side banners). If Vbulletin has a well-defined API then this might not be too hard to achieve along with using libraries such as jQuery mobile.

    2. would be more important than 1. I personally think as mobile devices these days are more like ultra portal tablets.

  • Hi doneandbusted,

RSS is actually an internet standard and not something we have the autority to alter :).

More streamlined mobile support is something that's been discussed before and we're aware that it is something people would like. Thank you for raising it again.
