Thank you all for replies, all very useful ideas. We decided to repair in the name of make do and mend really, just too bad we could not mend it ourselves (won't mess with electricals). Now that we are investing a good chunk of cash (£105) we will stick with this cooker for as long as possible.
However if we do change the kitchen - it is on the cards but DH is taking ages to do "the drawings " (never marry an architect if you want stuff to happen around the house! *rolls eyes*) - the cooker will hopefully be still good enough to go on a freecycle.
Am seriously considering a mini oven for the new kitchen though, whenever it will happen. Both DH and I feel uneasy about halogen oven, it feels too space-age for us old Luddites! If we could just cook on the wood stove we would do so, but it would not be practical (dreaming of an Aga!).
We are thinking of also buying a small portable wood fired pizza oven to put in the garden, it is so good for bread baking! Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).1 -

I have one, although it's not a portable one, and absolutely love it. Highly recommend. Pizzas are fantastic, as all the roast dishes I have made. I've only made flat breads so far, but will have to get better organised to have dough at the ready when firing up the oven for other things. There's a good UK forum on WFOs, many have built their own, or in the process. (Mine was bought locally).

i have a beautiful much loved double oven Rangemaster but what I use everyday except when I have guests is a Dualit mini oven bought unused on Ebay for £50, it is brilliant, I bake in it and everything. I bought it when my kitchen was being re-fitted and have used it ever since. The difference in electricity use is enormous.0

I haven't had a full sized stove since I moved in here, 4 years ago.
I use one of these.
Got it from Argos for £80.
It's available at that price now.0
