Cancelling Credit Card

Options
Hello, has anyone ever phoned to cancel their credit card. Am only asking as once I have paid of my capital one credit card I am going to phone up and cancel it, but am just wondering if they are going to give me the hard sell as I got when I cancelled my Experian credit service. They wouldn't take no for an answer, they really were hard work and am just wondering if credit card companies are the same.

  • Do you really need to cancel?

If you don't owe anything on it and it does not cost you anything to have the card keep it for emergencies?

I cancelled 2 x barclaycard and a Vanquis card about 6 months ago without any problems.

Its been a while since I cancelled a card, but it should be easy. Have a look at your terms and conditions as to the right way to go about it. It might be by letter for example.

If it is the case that they won't take No for an answer, just make sure you don't either ;)
  • Yes, as above. You also have the option of sending Capital One a secure message regarding cancelling your account. No need to telephone.

It may take a month as they would usually wait until the next statement is produced as some interest may be owed.
You may question anything I say. Just be polite, otherwise you go straight on to my Ignore List, which funds a good old fashioned knees-up every Xmas. Cheers;)
  • OK, Thankyou for all the replies, sounds like it wont be too difficult for me, I just hate it when companies pressure you

it won't be hard to cancel it, if you really don't want it any more.

You just have to be polite but very assertive if you 'phone. Or if they get really too pushy then the politeness goes out of the window!
  • Credit card companies are definitely the same. I managed to pay off my Halifax card (17.9% APR) and called to cancel it. Got put through to the 'closure' team where the guy ask me was I sure. I was. Then he asked why I wanted to close it. I said that I was clearing my debts. He asked had I other credit card debts and I said I did. So he told me it would be no problem to close the account but if he gave me 13 months at 0% on balance transfers would I like to do that. Since part of my debts was a barclaycard at 14.9% I decided to take him up on the offer and do the balance transfer. Making my debts cheaper and all that.

So I would just say if you are determined that you no longer need the card, then just keep saying no until they hear you. But if like me you have other debts, play the game. Keep saying no until they offer to give you 0% on a balance transfer. My Halifax card will never be used for anything other than that 0% balance transfer which I now intend to clear asap.

Why not just cut it up and then you don't need to ring them up to cancel it
