Selling Paper shares

Hi there,

I have paper shares from Scottish Hydro Electric that I bought 20 years ago. What are the best options to get them sold?

Any pointers appreciated, thanks :)

Scottish Hydro took over Southern Electric to become SSE plc. I think the old share certificates are still valid and equivalent to SSE certificates. Cheapest way to sell would be through an online broker like X-O. You need to open an account with X-O, transfer the shares in, and then sell.

Scottish Hydro Electric merged with Southern Electric plc to become Scottish and Southern Energy plc in December 1998

    SSE registrars are Capita Registrars.

In the first instance you should contact Capita Registrars: http://www.sse.com/Investors/InvestorAndShareholderContacts/

edit: if like Vortigern mentions in above post that Scottish Hydro Electric share certificates may still be valid then you can sell them through someone like X-O.co.uk.

If the share certificate is still valid, then like Vortigern says in their post you can do it via a broker like X-O.

I use X-O and it easy to sell certificated share holding through them-
Open a Share Dealing account with them (free to open and no annual account charges) then transfer your share certificate in to your account, then all you pay is £5.95 to sell.

How do I transfer in stock that I hold in the form of certificates?

With X-O.co.uk there are no account opening fees, management charges or inactivity fees, you can trade in any quoted UK equity (but not foreign stocks or unit trusts).
