So much for "Don't make it grow..." Pierre Omidyar's quote when eBay first started, when he was talking about his bank balance.

When he first started, within about a year he was worth 100 million quid and decided he didn't want any more, so made the famous "Don't make it grow" quote to the accountants.

Since then eBay become more and more streamlined, and a pure profit making machine, run solely for the investors and owners (which any good business should be).

Amazing how making some money suddenly turns you greedy though.
  • God forbid any business trying to increase thier profits!
OP - You moan about ebay getting one over on you with the increased fees, yet what you're suggesting is not much different.
Trying to get one over ebay by taking advantage of their selling platform & large audience, but trying to screw them on fees!

You're not comparing like with like. Ebay are not offering any material return for the fact that they now charge an additional 10% on postage. Its sheer profiteering. Previously they provided the same service without charging on top of postage, now they do.
To use your analogy it would be like filling up with £50 of petrol then being charged another fiver 'service charge' without any material improvement in the petrol or the service. Yes you can fill up elsewhere but it's still profiteering.
It doesn't really matter whether they are like for like, if someone charges a price for something you can either renegotiate that price (not possible with Ebay here) or shop elsewhere.Your petrol station does charge as much as they can get away with, if they randomly added £5 at the checkout without letting you know before you filled up you may have had a point.

If you want to be dishonest selling on Ebay there won't be many stopping you and you'll probably get away with it. Dress it up as not liking their fees and "they don't do anything for it" but it is still dishonest.

I don't think he has had much to do with Ebay for more than ten years. I haven't read about him for a while but Omidyar is quite a philanthropic chap by all accounts. Ebay, on the other hand is run by capitalists for shareholders.

  • I've noticed when shopping for car parts the breakers usually list just a "wheel nut" or similar for 99p.

In the description there is a note saying - "This listing is for one wheel nut only, we have other spares available - contact us on (#####)####### or *****@******.*** to check availability and we'll set it up as a "buy it now" item for you.

I may be cynical but I would imagine people who contact them direct get offered a better deal if they avoid ebay. If selling items in bulk, this is a tactic that might work as afaik it (appears to) break no rules. Description could also say "I may be able to discount on multiples if mailed" or "I have similar items please phone for my current stock."

^ the above is just a musing, please do not break ebays rules (I've never sold anything there due to the fees, gumtree is pretty useless but our local & well founded free-ad paper Trade-It is great, maybe you have similar in the area.)

You misunderstand. Nowhere did I advocate dishonesty.

Just include your contact details in the listing. Savvy buyers will contact you directly. Otherwise - put the price up and pay ebay fees like everyone else!
