Advice needed on sorting family debts not mine

Hi all,

I need advice any I can get.
My mum is currently in prison, the result of getting herself into a ton of debt and 'borrowing' what she could not pay back. I have been trying my hardest to sort her debts out, which I have done with help of the family to get debtors of our backs, the biggest issue I currently have is with her bank.
She banks with Halifax and has had no income going into this account for months however she is overdrawn to the max. I stopped all the direct debits and now as a result of them taking out overdraft charges she is now over the overdraft limit and has had a letter to say they now want £136. I have written 2 letters now explaining where my mum is and asking them to please freeze her account till she is out(soon hopefully) but they just do not reply to our letters or even write to her directly as other debtors ie Santander have done. I went into the bank and they did not want to know said they could only talk to my mum. Cheeky so and so also suggested I pay some money into the account to prevent this from happening again!! I explained I have paid off a lot of her debt and have a family of my own and surely as her bank they should be trying to help her get out of this mess?!

So my question is where do I go from here?

  • They are quite right that they cannot speak to you without authority.

However, your Mum only needs to write a "to whom it may concern" letter confirming that you have been appointed to act on her behalf and they authorised to deal with you.

You don't normally end up in prison for failing to pay your debts ;)

(unless its for failing to pay council tax, etc)

You don't know the circumstances, what a useful reply - not.
The important things in life are not things ........
