Any Speedfan know-alls around please?

Hello lovelies.

My laptop was getting very hot and the fan came on within a few minutes of the laptop being started so I decided to clean the fan (very proud of myself for doing it and not breaking my laptop!)

Unfortunately, I didn't run Speedfan before I cleaned the fan but I decided to run it afterwards. Please may I run the figures by someone better equipped to interpret them than me, please? :D

The figures are:

HDD: 38C
CPU: 54C
System: 56C
Temp 3: 0C
Temp1: 53C
Temp 2: 53C
Core 0: 54C
Core 1: 48C

CPU, system, temp 1, temp 2 and core 1 all have flame symbols next to them so I'm not sure if that means that my laptop is still running too hot. The temps are with FF open (three tabs), Chrome open (5 tabs), Thunderbird running in the background, Sims 3 updating and Speedfan running.

Thank you in advance.

Seems pretty good with all that running in the background.
it should drop back when idling
the little flames can be set to come on at different temps so they don't need to cause concern

    Hello. :D I remember you too. ;)

I can't believe I forgot to state the make and model! *stupid moment* It's a Sony Vaio E Series and the front of the laptop says VPCEB3JOE.

Ah okay. I learnt something new today then! Laptop is definitely alot better. Fan hasn't come on yet and laptop isn't struggling like it was before!

  • I wouldn't worry if it was regulary less than 60 degrees but I am not that much of an expert on anything :o. I think yours should be ok at those temps for the CPU, and clearing the fans/vents is a good idea, as is true for not using the laptop on soft furnishings etc. But certain graphic apps eg You Tube , watching iPlayer etc. in HD can push the onboard chipsets very hard especially if your AntiVirus runs regular scans too. I would wait for a more competent H/W person to pass more relevant comments.

I used to use Speedfan a lot a couple of years ago , but for some reason it doesn't read my current motherboard very well.

What you must do is set it up properly , or it won't work well at all.

Here's a good page that tells you how to do just that ... http://unitstep.net/blog/2007/11/02/using-speedfan-to-automatically-control-your-pcs-fan-speeds/

  • did you clean out the copper heatsink to wich the fan supplies the airflow through to your CPU?

quite fiddly job without a good tutorial wich can be found on tube, thermal paste also breaksdown and become less efficient to move the heat away from the CPU over time, maybe invest in some thermal paste such as antec thermal paste compounds if you separate the CPU cooler from the cpu in the future.

laptops run hot, speedfan is based around desktop pc heat values so almost always show a flame next to the temps when installed on a laptop.

if you do alot of laptop use in the house then have a laptop dock with additional cooling space with it just to keep the temps stable rather than blocking the intake fins with your lap.

    my solution would be.

if ever you need to open the back of you laptop to clean out the fan, is to clean out the copper heatsink inspect it (for burning i.e black spots on the shiney copper replace when you see this start happening) once you remove the heatsink you ALWAYS replace the thermal compound and apply it correctly (so no air is trapped between heatsink and cpu to cause temps to rise). if other fans are fitted such as memory fan or hardisk fans, GPU fan or additional cooling fans (where fitted) then inspect those aswell if they are not as quiet as the were then odds are they are worn and not as efficient as they should be so replace them.
