returning a bank transfer

  • Well I've just got off the phone with them and she said she will pass the details onto her manager and then they will try and contact the person who sent it and see if they want it back. Only then will it be returned to their account. Could take a couple of days. WEIRD

You would be better off just putting the money into a saving account
The funds were sent to the OP's savings account, according to post #5.

Of course the bank will remove the money if you ask them - and if they don't, go to the FOS and the Press. It is totally inconceivable that a bank would force a customer to keep what could be fraudulent money.

I'm fairly certain there have been previous threads where the banks have not taken it back, and told the recipient to leave it where it is until claimed. Which is why I replied as I did in post 3.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

I can't believe that you, as a bank employee, would suggest the OP should touch the money. Moving it into a savings account could be construed as being part of a potential fraud.

If that's the case then everyone who has had money paid incorrectly there account would simply just ask the bank to remove it.

If you can find a thread that suggests that has happened id be more than happy to read it!

The only thing the bank would do is write to the sending bank to notify them of the possible error.

NatWest will/should remove the money from you on request, although this may or may not depend on whether they can track down where it should have gone instead or ask the person who sent it.

I say this from personal experience, the same thing happened to me about 6 months ago - A random £200 transfer into my account that I wasn't expecting, called NatWest and told them it wasn't mine, they said they'd look into it and a couple of days later they wiped it off my account.

It happened with me with lloyds a long time ago and they would not take the money make. Plus I was always under the impression if no one claimed it after 6 years you could rightfully keep it. So by asking the bank to remove it how would you know what has happened to the money.

The only thing that crosses my mind is what happens if the bank remove the money then it turns out the funds was intended for the person.

Would the bank then just recredit the account or would they then want proof it was actually intended for the person.

Welcome to MSE by the way :-)

  • I assume if the funds were intended for me or anyone else who this has happened too they would probably know about it so they wouldn't have to call the bank?

I'm not entirely fussed where it came from, what happens too it when it leaves my account I'd just rather not be held responsible for someone else's pennies :) xx
