Try and use Parted Magic Version 2013_09_26 (costs £3-00) from www.partedmagic.com/doku.php?id=downloads
There are various recovery utilities on it including Recuva and PhotoRec.
Best to put Parted Magic on a spare USB flash drive using a utility called Rufus http://rufus.akeo.ie/ and boot from that drive and then use any of the relevant recovery utilities available on it. I have had success previously with it locating and recovering files off various drives including USB flash drives.

Sounds like a spam post but hey what do I know, if the disk is available or not, get http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download if you can get it to be recognised , this is free not £3.00 also recuva is free too . Answer my first post first then go ahead and pay £3.00 for free utilities..

Why bother to pay when you can download the utilities yourself for nothing?

All previous versions of Parted Magic were free. I only suggested it as I know it is good.
Parted Magic is linux based. Other good linux distros which can be used for recovery purposes include Puppy Linux and also SystemRescueCd. They are free.
