one would have thought that ( say ) 2000 at 0% was a lot better than 2000 at a high rate of interest

accept whatever is offered and then try for a second one.
  • I don't know if it is still possible (I don't see why not) but you could once upon a time transfer a balance to someone else's card (or rather they could transfer your balance to theirs if they were so minded and you were so lucky!).

Is that idea of any use or part of a solution? E.g. you find the best card for your son to continue with the lion's share of the debt in his own name, then transfer the remaining original card balance outstanding to one of your own at a low rate if you have that ability. When your son has paid off sufficient on the new card and /or allowed sufficient time to pass such that a further card application is not instantly declined, perhaps he can then get a second new card / take your bit of the debt back.

Once the original card is back to a zero balance, you might find that a low rate balance transfer back to the original card is a possibility for all or some of the debt too ...
From the late great Tommy Cooper: "He said 'I'm going to chop off the bottom of one of your trouser legs and put it in a library.' I thought 'That's a turn-up for the books.' "

I would transfer as much as you can to a lower rate if he isn't being offered the full amount at 0% anything is better than nothing. Then at least he could through as much money as possible at the higher rate debt.

What is the interest on his current card? Does he have missed or late payments? These could affect his ability to get a 0% deal.

I don't mean to sound cruel but he is a 28 yr old man surely he should be doing this for himself.
