All in one colour laser - Advice needed

I've been asked by a friend to recommend an all in one colour laser. I'm somewhat out of touch as mine is years old, A Samsung CLX-2160.

I have heard people say that some new printers will not use cheaper compatible toner or third party toner cartridges. I have no idea if this is true.

I've just bought a complete set of four cartridges for mine via eBay for £13.99 all chipped and ready to go. Apart from the toner cartridges that came with it mine has never had Samsung toner.

I'd hate to recommend a printer that can only use manufacturers cartridges that cost £100+ per set

Can anyone recommend a suitable colour laser all in one that can run on cheap replacement toner?

Thanks.

  • I work for Samsung on the printer side (software) and as far as I know there is no enforcement the use of genuine toner cartridges. In fact I have a Samsung printer myself and have never used a genuine cartridge yet?
  • All in one laser printers are not the cheapest and chances are they may not make the compatible toners as of yet if it is a new machine on the market.

I think they are better off looking at an all in ink jet printer as you can get these for approx. £100.00 and if you buy an older model then you should get the ink cartridges cheaper when you look at the compatible ones, Cannon, HP, Brother and a few others often have compatibles ones come out not long after the machine.

No he wants a laser, he has long periods when he doesn't print much followed by short periods when he prints a lot of stuff.

Every inkjet he's had has given him trouble drying out when not used regularly. He's tired of spending longer getting the printer going or replacing ink cartridges that aren't empty.

    Good to know.

I have no idea if other manufacturers try and enforce this or if it's just another urban legend, hence the question.

As long as you do your research a laser will cost far less per page than an ink jet., laser toners can cost more, but you can get over 1000 prints from them. I was spending a lot on new ink for my Epson. We had to change the cartridges every 3 weeks. 3 months in to my new laser and the toners report over 75% full. Too early to tell if the display is accurate... but my dell toners cost about the same as Epson cartridges so I know I'm massively better off already.

Try the above as a good example. Cartridges are about £15 each good for 1000 prints. You can get some deals on open box ones on eBay.

Oh and print quality is amazing on a laser compared to ink jet.

Now that definitely looks interesting, I'll pass it on.

    Thanks.

Just a note - I know you want laser for very good reason, but be aware inkjets often make nicer looking photo's. If it's photo printing you need, colour laser isn't optimal, usually, for some reason.

    He's aware thanks.

It's not photo's, it's text, charts and diagrams. Also some plans for circuit boards and other electronics, he builds stuff.

That is not always true depending on your print volumes and which ink jet you use.
