Bed bugs

We have been suffering unexplained bites for weeks.

Whilst changing my dd's bed sheets I found one.

Went to the shops to find some repellant but couldn't get any so had to order online. Whilst waiting for delivery (it was the weekend) I chucked out all 3 duvets and all the bedsheets. I bought an inflatable mattress for myself and DP. A ready bed for the 2 yr old and the 7yr old is on the sofa. We are all camped out in the living room with brand new bed sheets/duvets and pillows.

The spray arrived and we've moved the beds and used the sprays 3 times. We even undid the slats in the beds to remove them.

All was going well and we only found 10 or so (collecting them all in a pot)

We were thinking of moving back into our bedrooms today or tomorrow but then we randomly found one more bug on top of the toilet which is next to our bedroom. We are now really unsure about moving back into our bedrooms.

Wondering if anyone had any advice for us?

They are pretty hard to give rid off. My son brought them back to his flat (after a trip to New York we reckon, my advice to to wash everything on return and keep suitcases out of the house (i.e. in the loft or the garage).

Hot washing will get rid of them but of course you can't wash mattresses etc.. We got a steam cleaner any steamed all the places they like to lay eggs, under buttons on mattress, along the piping. For the divan base I unstapled the bottom sheet and steam every surface inside.

Often they hid during the day away from the bed, they come out at night and are attracted to the CO2 you breathe out. So we moved out the bed headboard, chest of drawers, nearby wardrobe, chair etc. and steamed the backs and all the crevices of those. And steamed the edge of the carpet/gap under the skirting board.

Took quite a while to all of that but we got rid of them.

You can also get some desiccating powder to create a kill barrier which isn't a harmful spray (harmful to humans that is). When they try to cross the powder it dries them out and kills them.
  • I steamed every part of the beds I could and the surrounding carpets. Moved chest of drawers and did under there too.

    Mattresses have also been steamed.
  • I would get the council or some professionals in. Bed bugs are hard to get rid of.
  • Well I've gone to the council website and have people coming on Tuesday to treat the bedrooms. Lets hope it's £98 well spent

We were sprayed on Tuesday and I put the children back into their room last night.

Older dd (7) was bitten on her foot and her back. Pulled up the mattress and found 4 adult bugs that were alive. Aren't they meant to be dead???
The drawers under her bed have small dead bugs in which is a good sign that the chemicals are working.

    Any more advice?

I'm going to have to call them out for a second spray aren't I?

What do the bugs look like? Do you have any pictures?
