Problem with debit card

I have a maestro debit card with Danske Bank,

A couple of days ago I tried to use it for a purchase in a retail store and it was rejected due to incorrect pin. The store allowed me to sign for the purchase.

I thought this was maybe a glitch or something with their machine but when I tried to withdraw cash from an atm yesterday it also rejected the card saying that the pin had not been entered correctly.

I rang the bank and was advised that I must have entered an incorrect pin but I am 100% sure that I did put in the right no. I use this card regularly and whilst I might have "brain freeze" at times, I am sure I know this pin!

The bank has advised that they will send me a reminder of the pin within 3 working days - but I know it already

The card is well used so I thought it might be damaged or worn, which might have caused this problem but the bank said "no" it would have shown on their systems if I had tried to use a damaged card.

So I await confirmation of the pin (that I already know) to try it again.

Has anyone else any experience of this? How did you resolve it?

Do you have a card reader, the ones used to authenticate online transactions? If so that can be used to confirm whether you are using the pin the card expects.

Would a card reader invalidate the card if the wrong PIN was entered 3 times? In other words could it write to the chip?
  • When you say the store let you sign? Did they swipe it or did it just revert to signature automatically via the chip after incorrect PIN?
  • OP have you checked if the PIN has been locked?

Go to an ATM put the card and PIN in and go to PIN services and see if the machine unlocks the card.
If not then the PIN is incorrect or the card is damaged.
The person you spoke to about damaged cards on the phone was talking through his backside. He could not possibly know if your card is damaged or not.

    Thanks for all the replies.

I don't have a card reader of online transactions.

I only entered the pin twice on each occasion (a couple of days apart) so as far as I know the card is not locked but will try at an atm .

I can't remember if the shop swiped the card or not but the transaction is showing on my online banking.

I have to go to my bank branch today to get some cash! So I'll see what they say as well.

This is just such a pain :(. I didn't realise how much I use this card - I really never use cash.

    Thanks again everyone.

It's always a good idea to have a second account with a different banking group. Unfortunately hindsight's 20/20 ,but it's something to think of for the future.

Yes pmduk - this is something I am going to try to do.

I actually do have a 2nd acc with Danske bank which the chap on the phone suggested I use but as this contains less than £10 balance and I have no idea of the pin for the card this was really not an option!

I have been to my bank and they haven given me some cash :j

They say the card is not blocked and to wait for the pin reminder. I had already tried the card again in the atm outside - refused. I need to stop doing this or they will really block me! But I am so sure I am using the correct pin. (Unless I am losing my mind )
