Insuring a second car whilst also on motability scheme

Hi

We recently purchased a second car as my wife can now drive herself again after a long illness and we now live in an area where we both need a car. Until recently I have been the main driver of the wife's Motability car. My problem starts when I go to insure the additional i.e. our own car. I have too many years NCB to remember but no insurance company will accept NCB on the new car. A couple have said that they will accept a letter from RSA and accept this as evidence of no claims but not while we still have the Motability Car. I understand that some insurance companies will only protect you on one car. As we do not own the Motability Car (but only lease in theory) surely we only have one car that we are insuring. The Motability Car is insured through the car scheme. We do not own the policy ourselves. I have had no choice but to buy a policy but at a crazy cost for a 48 year old man with an excellent driving history. Would welcome anyone else's views or knowledge.

Thanks

Try speaking to a local broker but avoid Swintons, most can arrange to mirror the no claims bonus you have on the other vehicle onto the new vehicle.

Are you trying to use your ncb on two cars?
  • No I am not trying to use NCB twice. With a Motability car, the car is supplied under a lease agreement and is provided with insurance. Motability Operations use Sun Alliance insurance for their fleet. Motability own the car, not us. Therefore we do not have a policy in our name. Some insurances are willing to take a letter off Sun Alliance as proof of NCB but only if we are running the one car. I would suggest that we would only be running one car as the second is leased to us. I have accumulated my NCB over several years of careful driving but on the second car I have had to start my NCB at zero. Therefore in a few years time I will have accumulated my NCB again and the insurance companies would be more than happy to allow me NCB despite the likelihood that we would still be running a Motability car. Therefore as I have already accumulated NCB bonuses over many years why does it not apply now. I understood that a NCB bonus was in recognition of not having made claims and the fact that I would be seen as a lower risk.

Ncb isn't just awarded for claim free driving.

You also need to buy a policy that awards ncd.

So you have nil ncd to use on this new car.

But as already advised see if a local broker (not swinton) can help get you a discount to reflect your driving experience.
