Insurance Oddity
Hi Everyone.
I've got into a good situation where I have a new job that gets a car allowance as I will have to travel a little.
I car share with my Wife and have been the other named driver on her policy for the past 10 years, Its probably 8 or 9 years since I have had a policy in my name.
Any idea how I can get any no claims transferred into my name to start a policy for when I get another car with my car allowance.
We'll be keeping our existing car (or maybe downsizing that) so will be a 2 car family.
Could I carry on getting a policy in my Wifes name but with me named as the main driver, or is it best to speak to a broker who has knowledge of companies that can take things into account in leu of no claims.
Thanks

Speak on the phone to a few companies. Some might give you some introductory bonus. But it's very much a "might". It's not an entitlement.
You can't use your wife's NCB on 2 cars anyway, so there's no benefit to you in taking another policy in her name. You may find that you can't have business cover doing it that way anyway, so probably not in line with your car allowance.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -
I think you will be on a steep learning curve here as you are using some strange language which is just not the way UK insurance thinks or works.

That is impossible - the NCB belongs to your wife.

Do you mean your wife taking out another policy in her name naming you as the main driver? Where is there any benefit in that?
Is this new car going to be registered with DVLA naming you, or your wife, as the keeper?
Whether you meant it or not, your entire post comes across as if you are trying to 'use' your wife's insurance history to obtain some benefit that you are not entitled to.
Hopefully just a poor choice of wording.
Before you contact a broker I would think carefully about how you could present your requirements in a less sexist, exploitative sounding way.
Married or not, many insurance companies will view your status as just that of a named driver on someone else's policy.
However you should find a few that will give you some introductory discount though - but not a NCB. You have not had any policy to claim on for 8 or 9 years.0 -

.
Not true, actually. Many insurers will allow it if the wife puts it in writing. It's a permanent thing though. Plus wife will then have zero NCB.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -
Thanks, yes just badly worded on my behalf, anywhere with "I" above should probably have read "We", its just that as its my job that has caused the changes, it will be me that will needs to find out the best insurance solution.
We have car shared and as the majority of the driving has been my Wife, she has always been names as the main driver. On the few quotes or insurance policies that ask for a percentage or total mileage per driver we have put it at about 60% me wife 40% me. I had noticed that we could in the past put myself as the main driver on our policy even though the policy was in my wifes name, and even as a named driver I currently have business use included in the insurance policy (it cost no extra to add on).0 -
ring the insurance company ypour wife uses. mine matched the existing ncd onto the new car if I promised to stay with them for two years.
if I left after one year, they'd have declared one year ncd to the next company0 -

Thanks, that's really interesting! Was that as a second household car when you didn't originally have one?0 -
It was Aviva. I've now moved the cars onto a multicar policy with them, making some decent savings.0

Wow that'e great, if that was possible for us it would save a few hundred £'s potentially, out of interest which company is it (or PM me if you don't want to say).
Lots of companies do it, try a popping into a local broker, they will have schemes set up with Insurers who allow this.
Be aware some Insurers will issue proof of no claims bonus stating what you have actually earned with them, some will not have the system to do this and will send out proof of maximum no claims bonus which means you can then go to any Insurer with your maximum no claims bonus.0
