Whether that is true or not, you seem to have missed the point that Orange/EE said not to pay :wall::wall:

And if Orange/EE told you to put your head in an unlit gas oven........?

This is especially important to demand to pay (by automated system, if necessary) when you're dealing with a non-CCA agreement.

It's not just a late payment, they defaulted the account and sent it to a debt collector where it was paid and "satisfied" on the credit file

They do not do this for missing a monthly payment. You would have to have ceased all payments - i.e. paid nothing - in order for this to have happened. You certainly have every right not to pay amounts in dispute, bug none to stop all payments to account for items not deemed to be an issue.

They may have said do not pay the disputed amount, but most certainly not put a hold on everything for some unspecified review.

No, you make sure that the fact that you have communicated that there is a dispute is recorded in a form which you can use as evidence.
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

Unbelievably daft comparison. If they told you that, obviously then anyone sane would not do it.

However here, a big household name that people could expect to take the word of has told someone not to pay the bill until the dispute has been resolved. Maybe it was not wise to take them on their word, but you cannot blame them for doing so. And if Orange has said this, then defaulting the account for non payments was out of order, regardless of anything else.
Still rolling rolling rolling...... :) <

  • So did you make any payments towards the undisputed part of the bill, OP?

I understand that they may have investigated the disputed part but what about the basic monthly charges etc?
  • They did the same to me I moved away and they changed my billing address but not my mailing so I was unaware of the charge left as they shut down my online account as I thought the account was closed.

After many angry letters, emails and calls they admitted fault and the default has been removed x
  • I have just won a case against "tmobile" I.e EE they put a default onto my credit files 7 years after my account was closed etc, I contacted CISAS who investigated my claim I was right and they removed the default from my credit files and I was also awarded £500 compensation as was declined a morgtage as had proof. They went in my favour because EE had a duty of care for my personal details and incorrect defaulting me. It took 6 weeks, you can fill out the form online. I would recommend doing that ASAP , there is hope

    Good Luck

Should at least suggest turning the gas on first.

I had the same situation with British Gas. Moved into a new property and sent them the final readings for my old address. They kept sending me estimated bills and asking for payment. Think the whole process went on for 3 months.

Eventually received a letter from a debt collector demanding payment, wrote to them to advise I was happy to pay but they need to supply me with a final bill got nowhere. British Gas gave me a default for not paying but after complaining they removed this and finally sent me a final bill which I paid..

I think companies these days are sometime to quick to just default someone..
