Have a 2007 mk3 mondeo estate 2.0 diesel with 1 key-need a spare.
Went to timpsons and was quoted £100 for a remote fob but only £35 for a non remote one. (both would be 'chipped' to unlock immobiliser)

The chap said if the car has an alarm i would need to get the remote fob as without it the alarm would not be turned off : - so - does my car have an alarm and do i Need to spend £100?

thanks

Will the chip just be a clone of your current key though? If you lose a key you wont be able to remove the lost/stolen key because it will have the same code as the other one.

Yes you have an alarm. Unlock the car with the remote and it disables the alarm automatically. Open the car with the key and you have approx 20 seconds to put the ignition on before the alarm goes off.

What key do you have now? One remote and one standard key is normally what you get.

Bit late now. But never buy a modern car without a full set of keys...

Dont use Timpsons, They are not cheap and as the one you went to proves, They dont know all the facts.

As long as the plain key has the chip programmed then it will disable the alarm when you put the ignition on.

Not a fan of cloned keys. You cannot add or remove keys with a cloned one.

    Thanks for the reply forgotmyname.
Bit confused now -I have just the remote key and the fear is if I lose it without having a spare then it's new locks/immobiliser all round.
Are you saying if Timpsons are offering a clone then ,should i lose the original, i would still be unable to have another key made because I only have the clone to cut it from?

And if not Timpsons then is the best/only option a Ford dealer?

You have the remote key so thats all good. You can get the standard key with cut and programmed or cloned.

If you lose the key you have now or the new one then you wont be able to lock that key out. So if its stolen or found they have access to your car and it will start the engine.

You can get another key cloned from a clone. Thats not an issue.

You just cannot lock that code out without losing both keys. And cannot add new keys or remove old keys.

Some locksmiths will have the equipment to program a proper new with with a unique code. Thats the ideal solution and possibly cheaper than what Timpsons quoted.

I bought a plain key off ebay £8.50 and had it cut at the local locksmith in the market for £2.
As i already had 2 keys i could program it myself and erase any old keys that may have been stored in the memory.

I had the same issue with an 05 Mondeo.

Nobody i spoke to could do it properly and it was Ford only.

Not cheap but what is the point of a key that is only half right.

    Just my opinion.

And, yes, your Mondeo has an alarm. I am sure if you pressed lock again after locking it was deadlocked.
