I cant believe your friend is paying her cash, and keeping the mortgage.

should've said tough sh*t, either he can get a mortgage or he cant. the ex is laughing all the way to the bank! (or not as this case)
  • The ex is also leaving herself exposed if the friend gets into financial difficulties with the property.

This is madness! Is he seriously paying her for her half of the property even though she'll still be on the mortgage and deeds or have I misunderstood?

You don't pay somebody for something years before they give it to you!

He needs to talk to a solicitor, he sounds out of his depth.

The friend urgently needs to see a lawyer as it is quite possible that he could pay over all this money and she could still come back in 10 years time and claim half the value of the house.

Added to which if she is on the deeds, this could affect her right to claim benefits.

Assuming that the sums are reasonable here, although maintenance wouldn't affect her benefits, having a lump sum would. I assume that the cash is therefore being (fraudulently) kept secret from the DWP and she feels cash is not as traceable. It sounds very murky
