The emphasis of my comment was on the need to get a 2nd opinion not on the comparison with my boiler. I didn't find my firm with a pin in yellow pages. I have been using them for about 10 years. katejo, I understand what you are saying but from what the OP says he unlike you and I who know a gas engineer we can trust,
they don't ,
so for them British Gas seems like a sensible place to start,
anyways that apart , if its not safe its not safe, at the end of the day its OP choice to replace or not ,
the boiler could well be more than 20 years old and in that case spares may not now be available,0 -
Any boiler needs regular servicing and the service BG do will certainly check the safety of the installation.After 20 years its obviously likely to need replacing soon.
With BG in particular you need to distinguish between something being unsafe (they will disable it) and something not complying with current regulations. The latter is not unsafe but the notice will give the impression it is because of headings about safety.
BG will issue paperwork on a 1 year old boiler to highlight that the installation does not comply with this year's regulations even if it complied with last year's regulations. So for a 20 year boiler its not surprising that the boiler does not comply with today's regulations.
A CO detector makes sense with a boiler of any age.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -
I have a 30+ year old baxi back boiler in my house. We have an annual service via BG homecare and if we have any faults with CH system they come out to repair.
To date the boiler has never broken down and we've lived here 18 years.
For us to replace our back boiler is expensive and disruptive. Current boiler is located on inside wall (we are a semi) and we will have to move it about 35ft to outside wall.

Have BG switched boiler off due to safety issues or just issued you an advisory letter.
We have an advisory letter at our annual service because our vent is too small. When we had building work done a few years ago and replaced our french doors we installed a new vent. BG were on site for service and agreed size of vent required legally with builder. A couple of years later the regulations changed and you now need a bigger vent so no real safety issue.
