Cat Food Trouble

Hello

We have two gorgeous cats who have started to refuse the food we are giving them. They have both been recently checked by the vet so there are no health reasons. One is 10+ and the other is 3.

Over the years we have tried them on different brands which often they will eat happily for a few weeks/months and then randomly for no reason they will just refuse to eat any more of the sachets. However recently they have started refusing straight away.

Normally they have dry food left out which is changed twice daily and they are given a sachet each of wet food morning and night. Fresh water twice a day and their dishes are cleaned daily too.

It is the wet food that they are turning their noses up at we have tried them:

All super market own brands
Felix
Kitecat
Wiskas

Also tried Iaams which they would not go near :(

We only buy from supermarkets for ease and I would be happy to purchase other brands online but they are more expensive and I am worried we will just be wasting more money.

Any ideas??

Our two were quite happy with Iams dry food but now refuse to eat it. They will now only eat Sheba in the small foil trays and Felix as good as it looks.

I often think if they were hungry enough they would not be so fussy.

    You could try the following.

Put down a tiny amount of food only when they are begging. Don't put a full portion down. The ' like it or lump it ' theory.

Wash food and water bowls in hot water only. Leave to soak if there are sticky bits. Cats can be sensitive to washing up liquid / soap, no matter how well you rinse.

Alternate flavours so they don't get bored of the same meal every time.

MIAMOR This is an anti-hairball product. One small sachet per day. My cats LOVE it. You could try putting it down as a treat at the end of the day. Try pouring it over some kibble;)
  • My two young cats are fussy eaters too. Have a look on Zooplus for a big choice of food for your kitties.

The current favourite for my two is Arden Grange (dry). Not cheap but Barley purrs while he is eating it. Some flavours are more popular than others, they especially like the ocean fish and potato.

As to wet food, they are not that fond of Whiskers or Felix etc either. I have been thinking about just buying a couple of tins of tuna a week and giving a little of that everyday instead.
It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.

  • Mine have turned their noses up at Felix, whiskas and James wellbeloved.....they've now been on Eden for over a month and so far, so good.

I feel your pain over this!

Ours are spoilt boys and will often turn their nose up at at brand that they have gobbled the previous week.

They do however seem to like Royal Canin for "fussy eaters". It's a dry food so easy to feed, and all 3 cats will eat this. Maybe worth a try. I have been using this for several years and they still accept it. So at least if you know they can get their nutrition from this they will be well fed.

Ours will sometimes pine on for some wet food as well.

Are there any flavours that you have noticed the cats prefer - do they like gravy rather than jelly? (one of ours will only eat tuna flavour wet food!)

Sheba wet food seems to go down well with our boys but it is expensive and sometimes I wonder if I need my head examined! I probably worry more about what they are eating than what I am!

I always think that as long as I have provided sufficient fresh food they will not starve and it's up to them if they eat it, but when they don't eat it fairly immediately I'm looking for something else
  • My cat won't eat any wet food whatsoever and never has, so I've given up offering any now. I suggest you consider doing the same and save yourself a load of time, trouble and money.
  • All big supermarkets stock Classic:

Cheap but quite decent - I have 6 cats and they all love it, worth a try if you do not want to order online?

They do fish or meat or mixed pack of 6 tins for around £3.00.

I run out yesterday (delivery today) so got my lot 2 tins of Felix - jessssssssssssssssssssssssss, forgot how Felix tins stink... Yukkkkk

    Classic much better than Felix/Whiskas/Go-Cat

My neutered Tom loves whiskas temptations cat treats, particularly cheese flavour. He drives me crazy scratching at the cupboard that he knows they are in. As they are £1 a pot when on offer, I've considered mixing them with his dried food. I usually buy Purina as he prefers it to Iams. He would eat all day if I let him.
  • Look for Applaws and Encore sachets and cans. My kitty adores these. They are expensive but have no nasty cereal added and no awful smells.

  • Take food away after ten minutes, whether it's been eaten or not. I've had to train mine to eat quickly as I have two picky cats and one gannet who will eat his own and then the other cats food too. They soon got the message. I feed only dry so there's no waste, it might be different with wet.
