Opening up a port...

I've been trying to open up port 54000 on my new PC and the netgear router which should already be open. How do I do this, I've delved into the windows firewall (yes I'm on vista) and tried to alter the rules but it still shows up as blocked. Any ideas?

Blackadder: Yes it is.
Baldrick: Hmm... that's cunning.

On my router I opened up ports by firstly in the content filtering section going to services and adding a custom service. I then went to Firewall rules and added an inbound service rule0

There's an option saying "Send to LAN Server ... __ . __ . __ . __" what does this mean and what do I put in these boxes?
THanks again

Its the ip of your PC in my case its 192.168.0.2 - the router is .0.1
if you right click on your lan connection in network places and pick status and support it should give you your ip0 -
I'm connected to the router through the ethernet cable, my PC didn't come with a wireless card
Not sure where to look!

EDIT - I clicked on the router options menu and looked under attached devices, it was .03
Now however I'm getting this when I do the test:
Testing port 50400 ...
NAT Error - Connect attempt to 172.203.173.88:50400 (your computer) timed out after 20 seconds. This means your port is probably closed.

have you enabled the rule
also check which port you wanted - your first post stated it was 54000 and the test was for 504000 -
Silly me :rotfl: It was a typo in the first post, it is 50400 I'm looking to unblock and that's the one listed in the windows firewall and router, all are enabled. The windows firewall has 50400 listed under "Local" and "Remote" whatever that means, I can't think what else to do :wall:Blackadder: Baldrick, I have a very, very, very cunning plan.

have you tried temporarily disabling the windows firewall to see if it works. It might narrow down your problem. Also - you don't have any 3 party firewalls do you?0
-
is it a udp or tcp service and what site are you using to test it and I'll see if I can get it to work0

Brilliant idea! I changed the firewall state of the "private profile" to off. I know below it says on but I took screenshot after the nat test said it was successful:
Testing port 50400 ... OK !
Congratulations, you fixed it!
If only I could run without a firewall :rotfl:
What exactly is private profile? I'll poke around and see what I can find, but I've already tried the obvious settings
All rules state private profile and there is a rule for UDP and TCP, so not sure what else I can do! Blackadder: Baldrick, I have a very, very, very cunning plan.

OK update, I ditched the current rules and created two new rules, entered port number and selected private, and then allow, clicked finish and hey presto! Thanks very very much for your help I've learned a lot today!!
