Thinking about CBT (or full course)

Hi, I just wanted to get some advise before doing a full or CBT course.
1. Are most of companies pretty similar with training? Price seems to be very close to each other.
2. Optional Collision Damage Waiver, is this worth paying for or is it just so unlikely to have accident that better to risk it? I mean do they make nice extra bit of money just from fear of people having accident when in reality accidents hardly happen?

Comments

  • Surely the riding school will already have insurance to cover someone coming off/dropping a bike.

Sounds like an extra money maker.
  • Accidents rarely happen but they do. My brother in law had another trainee crash into him approaching some red lights.

Is there an excess to pay if you do cause any damage or have an accident?
Is the CDW charge worth paying to elinimate that?
Does the charge eliminate it completely?

CBT or full course. Do you want to ride anything bigger than a restricted 125?

Do you want to spend £400 - £600+? Now ow £150 + every 2 years?

Not all schools or instructors are the same. You may get a great instructor on recommended by lots of people yet they are just someone that you dont get along with.
Their teaching style may not suit you.

And some will be better than others. Ask what happens if you need to cancel at the last minute on a lesson or test.
Someone thats cheaper initially may work out rather expensive if you did need to cancel.

A company that charge a bit more initially may absorb some of the cost of rebooking.

Do the CBT alone first. If you hate it, the instructors turn out to be useless or you turn out to be useless, you've not wasted the rest of the money. If you go on to do the full course with the same people, I'm sure they'll take it into account if there would have been a better price for the whole lot booked at once.

In addition, you might find you don't need as much instruction. When I did my CBT (enjoyed it, but never got round to going further), the instructor reckoned I could bypass the first day of the intensive course.

The CBT "syllabus" is fixed. The quality of instruction will vary as much as in any other field.

I paid for it for my CBT. It was so cheap as to be barely worth worrying about. If you drop the bike, a footpeg or a brake lever will likely be the same cost as the premium, so you'd break even there. If you really muck it up, you're quids in.
  • I did my CBT earlier on this year. One of the things that I was advised was to ask how many students they have at a time.
I think they are allowed to take 4 out but the better ones limit it to 2 at a time.

As for Collision Damage Waiver, it was never even mentioned, we were fully insured. In fact, in all the research and web sites of various schools I don't recall ever seeing anything about it.

See how much the waiver is, if it is £20 or so, pay it, and factor it into the cost of the CBT.

When you get the bike, it will likely look as if it has been down the road on its side already. Some less than scrupulous people will then claim that you have added extra damage on its return, and charge you for it.

Depending on your current level of experience, dropping the 'bike at low speed can be quite likely anyway.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
