Offers - how do they work?

Hi,

I would like to purchase a property I have viewed.

I am trying to work out how the offers situation works.

Can I only put in an offer if I have had the place valued?

Also can I only put in an offer through a solicitor or could I out an offer in myself?

Thanks in advance for any advice offered.
