which is fine and will speed up your system slightly but technology moves on as most software nowadays will no longer work on for instance windows xp so you can spend money on more memory but thats not a guarantee for better performance if you start upgrading memory next you will be advised to get a new graphics card then maybe to upgrade the operating system which all cost my advice is read up on some of the free linux operating systems which may give your pc a few more years or buy a new PC.

Nonsense. More RAM will give a better performance. It's certainly worth spending less than a tenner to make the thing more usable. No one has and will suggest a Graphics card on such a machine, nor to upgrade the OS on a Pentium 4.

Either way, I would do the clean up or clean install first and worry about more RAM later.

im sorry what part of what I said was as you put it nonsense, I never said more ram would not increase the performance I said it would improve it slightly which to be fair is a fact.

    All this is nonsense:

and try some punctuation if you actually expect someone to read it.
  • Harsh and a little mean. =p
the information I am giving out is not nonsense but based on personal experience, I am very sorry if my grammar does not meet your approval.

Lol im a newbie trying to help and as this is a savings forum I figured my idea which costs nothing (accept some poor grammar and spelling) would be preferable to actually spending money on new ram which may or may not be required.
    .
  • except ;-)

and what is the =p are you sticking your tongue out?

BTW I finally retired my much loved 13 year old computer last year as new software was not always available for XP, still miss XP it was great........ah well the joys of computing, off to bed night

Did not realise advice was dependent on how good your grammar and spelling was I thought people wanted to here the best/cheapest way to achieve there goal. My mistake obviously.

Indeed she can achieve her goal by simply cleaning up or reinstalling XP. Then the thing would be usable, instead of interminably slow.
She already has a laptop, Netbook and iPad, remember?
If you think the likes of Ubuntu wouldn't benefit from the increase in RAM, you'd be sorely deluded.

So don't exaggerate your case or you lose credibility.

There are other factors that slow that particular machine down. One is that it only has a single EIDE connector. Another no PCI Express slot...
Installing a flavour of Linux wouldn't help in any of these cases.

But perhaps next April, the OP can decide to play around with one.
