woolwich shares.

Is there any way I can find out, how many shares my son was given by the woolwich and how much diviends he was paid over the years.

I need some help not sure where to go. My son was born in1989 and my then husband gave his dad £100 (Which another realative had given us for the baby),to open an savings account for our son. He opened the account with the woolwich. In I think 1996 the woolwich gave out shares to all account holders.
My father inlaw has insisted on keeping the account in his name and said our son can not access the account until he is 18.
Our son is coming up for 18 and wishes to buy a new car and wants the account book. My father law (who has money troubles) said there is just over £1000 in the account and will clear it out and send the cheque to my son. He doesn't seem to want to give him the book? I feel my father in law is not being honest with us, but on the other hand I could be completely wrong I need to find out if my suspicions are right or wrong. Please can anyone help?
