How does SSP Work?

My friend is currently in hospital after an emergency operation and he is worried about his sick pay as he doesn't know how it works.

When he sends his sick notes in, will the office sort it out for him or is there anything he has to do?

He's never been off work longer than a couple of days, and i don't have a clue, never having been in this situation.
just passing through.... Nothing to see....

  • it depends what his employer provides for sickness, some will pay full pay for a period, others ssp, others nothing in which case esa has to be claimed from the dwp
in all cases a fit note(as they are now called)has to be provided to cover the relevant dates(more than one may be needed if the first runs out)

But the starting point is to send his Fit Note to his employer. They will either pay CSP or SSP in the way they normally pay his wages, OR they must give him a form / letter which says why they are not paying SSP. If they do the latter, it will have details of what to do in terms of claiming other benefits.

Also if he's off for (I think) more than 28 weeks, his employer should write and say that they are stopping SSP and give details of how to claim benefits. Let's hope he's better before that!
