Help needed with levelling old floor

Options
Hi there! am busy putting in laminate flooring from kitchen right through lounge/dining room etc. Only problem is the flooring under the carpet is old broken and uneven tiles. In some cases the flooring has dropped over 2 cms! so i cant apparently use self levelling stuff as its only used up to 6 mm? I have had few quotes in from various builder/plastering peeps - but cheapest quote i've had so far is over £160 and thats only for a third of the floor (room is 12 feet by 10), which i reckoned is a little pricey. Can i get away with putting down a sand/cement mix to level up worse bits of floor? or do i work more overtime and get a professional in?? I am laying insulation boards and laminate on top of - so these will take up any minor variations - skirting boards are being replaced. The other end of room is floor boards(floating floor thing) so i know what to do there just this tiled floor and its poor comndition has me a bit baffled.?Many thanks

Using floor leveller should be fine in this case, leveling floor is unecessary over its entire area (unless playing snooker/marbles) :rotfl: as it is extremely difficult/expensive even for a professional to obtain true level over all axis. All that's required for a good base for laminate is an EVEN floor with no great (more than 4mm) undulations particularly bumps, this can be checked with a straight edge, grind off any lumps as these will cause doors to foul and the laminate to suffer from premature 'spot' wear. Don't mix leveller too thin and resist temptation to 'over trowel' the leveller as this will cause ridges which won't settle in the leveller, Good Luck, its not that difficult, if still not sure try a small area first and try your hand.
