Skoda have gone through quite a few 1.9 TDI versions! ;)

most common to come by is the ALH,AQM, ASV and BXE engine, there were a few of the 4x4 TDI 1.9 estate elegance's made with the DPF fitted but is considdered the oddball PD engine and not many around.

DPFs are not just removed by 'silly little boys who fit large speakers in the boot', they are also removed by people who want to make use of the extra 10% increase in MPG that comes without a DPF fitted.

I had a '99 plate 1.9 Octavia and had no issues with black smoke.
Now have a Berlingo 1.6HDi 90BHP (no DPF on these either). No black smoke from that either.

I'm a member of a car club for the kind of car I drive. The ownership demographic is men in their 40s and 50s (it's that sort of car.) A couple of members have removed the DPF and reported that, while throttle response is noticeably improved, mpg is unaffected.

  • A diesel which hasn't had an Italian tune up for a while will build up deposits in the exhaust that will blow out and produce black smoke.

Maybe your missus is ragging the bollox off the car and not allowing the build up of soot???
