Incorrect meter readings gone unnoticed, help.
Wondering if anyone can advise us what to do. Our deal with our supplier ends this month so was looking at their other deals and pulled up an online bill to compare. I never look at the actual bill as the online account shows the bill total and credit debits.
So I look at this bill and realise that we have mistakenly been entering our meter readings incorrectly. We have been putting the day in night and vice versa. So obviously we have been seriously underpaying:eek:
We had a new meter put in some time ago, not sure how long ago but I can only think it went wrong then. I must have mistaken which was day and night as the numbers would have been similar to start with.
We have sent them an email to ask me to call us because we are not disputing that we owe them money but I am really annoyed that we had our meter read in Sept last year and they didn't pick up that we were doing it wrong.
So I guess my question is, how come the meter reader didn't notice it was wrong, or if they are just number punching how come the supplier didn't pick up on it, which I guess they wouldn't if meter reader made the same mistake as us and the meter readings are set in the wrong order.
Anyone had any experience of this and could offer any insight into how to deal with the supplier over any underpayment we may need to pay back.
Thank you.

The billing sytem is entirely automated, so if the figures tallied with what the computer would 'expect' to see as a valid reading, then it wouldn't be queried.
You should be given the same period to pay back the arrears as the period over which it has built up.
Are you sure that you've been underpaying and not overpaying? No free lunch, and no free laptop
