Npower overcharging?

  • Thank you for your help anyway :)
I appreciate the input into my problem,
It was very informative, and more helpful than Npower..

I will speak to Npower some more, and talk about a more realistic dd. And arrange a payment with them for the debt.

    Many thanks

The last meter reading was beginning of oct 12 at 8821 kwh day and 2792 kwh night. Meter reading at the end of march 13 was 12425 kwh day and 4469 night.

So you used approx 29kwh a day between October 12 and march 13 and this is based on actual readings. This is not a huge amount for an all electric property during winter.

The issue you have has been caused by a few things.

    1. A unrealistic DD set up too low.
    2. Estimated readings not being corrected possibly resulting in DD not being correctly reviewed.

What you need to do now is.
    1. Ensure you are on the best tariff for your needs.
    2. Figure out your correct annual consumption amount. In both kWh and cost on your choice of tariff.
    3. Combine the annual cost and any outstanding balance (do this upto date) and divide it by 12 amounts. Suggest this amount to Npower as your new dd amount. If this is too much you might be able to stretch the repayments over a longer period though it might be a struggle to get npower to agree to this.
    3. Keep a closer eye on meter readings and bills in the future

When you receive a bill and it is based on an estimated reading, read your meter and phone your supplier with the readings. Remember suppliers only have to read your mete every 2 years.

The reading today is 14175 rate 1 (day) 5624 rate 2

So from last October 12 to today you have used 8,486kWh of which 2,832 was at off-peak.

So in round figures you are using approx. 9,000kWh a year of which 30% is on off peak rates

I don't know what tariff you are on with Npower or the area you live, but at today's NPower standard rate(which has a small standing charge) for the Midlands that consumption would cost £1,454 pa(approx. £121 a month)

There are several tariffs with other companies that are over £300 pa cheaper. M & S cost £1,073 so £381 cheaper(26%) (approx. £89 a month)

If you post exact details of your tariff and area we can advise better, however you wouldn't be able to switch supplier until you have cleared your debt with Npower.

However the figures above indicate just how unrealistic £45 a month was for your consumption, and the reason for your debit balance.

P.S. 9,000kWh for an all electric flat is not excessive, although you should probably have a higher percentage at off-peak rates.
