Capital One Cashback on existing card !

All

I thought I'd just let people know about the email I just received, as its quite strange, but very welcome!

I previously used a cashback Barclaycard for all my new spend (that was going to be paid off in full), but then took them up on a BT offer about 6 months ago. This left me using my Nationwide Select card instead which also offers cashback but only at a flat rate of 0.5%.

I spend a considerable amount on travel expenses for work (average between 2K-6K per month), so a good cashback card can be worth quite a bit to me, and I was interested in getting something better to replace my Barclaycard which is out of action until Jan 2015 due to the BT. About 4 months ago I applied for the Capital One Aspire World card which pays up to 1.25% (for spend over £10K pa). At the time I still had about £4K of old debt on my existing Capital One card (a "standard" card with no extra benefits but a healthy 15K limit, that I've had for years) and I was rejected for this new one.

I accepted the rejection (after all I still had about 18K total of old debt on my cards at the time) and resigned myself to continuing to use the NW card at 0.5% cashback instead.

My Capital One balance was cleared about 2 months ago and I've been spending about £10 a month on it just to keep it ticking over ever since. I had toyed with the idea of reapplying after 6 months now that this card was clear, but then noted a week or so back that Capital One no longer offer the Aspire World deal.

Imagine my delight then, when I just rec'd an email from Capital One reminding me (although its actually the first I've heard of it) that I will start earning cashback at the rates previously offered on the Aspire World on my existing card from next month!

I don't know whether this is a general thing, or whether I was targeted for this given the history I outlined above, but its worth anyone who has a Capital One card checking your junk mail folder for a similar email as you do have to activate the cashback, it doesn't happen unless you do so (before 5th Oct in my case).

  • Do you do a lot of personal travel too?

Would have thought with a high spend each month that cleared by expenses that an AmEx card would be fairly high on your list. I know my MR points are worth a much more than the 1.25% from my Capital One Aspire backup card

To be honest I was turned down for an Amex about a year ago (despite previously having held a "plain green" Amex for a number of years), and had decided to leave reapplying to them until all my old CC debts were completely cleared - so thats about another year to go..
  • Strange, we were advised to cancel our account and reapply. Mine still had cashback due to be paid so my dh cancelled his and was advised to wait for the letter. We received the letter and now it isn't there!!

I had applied as an existing customer and been rejected (because I was an existing customer), but alas no email for me.
