Overcharged?

Hello, does anyone know if there is a way to ascertain whether I am being overcharged for my electricity supply?
I've been paying £78 per month for a one bedroom flat - and EDF would want me to put it up as they say it's not enough to cover the usage! It's two of us living here, and we have the usual appliances - pc, washing machine, no dishwasher, 5* fridge, no freezer, plasma TV and hi-fi audio system. It just seems too much, and last time I spoke to them they said they could send someone out to check the meter but it would be chargeable :( Anyone been in the same situation?
Thanks

    Welcome to the forum.

Can we assume you heat the flat and hot water with electricity?

If so £78 is well below average.

If you heat with gas, with two people the size of the flat has little affect on electricity consumption and £78 would be well above average.

can you give details of your energy usage (kwh)on the latest bill, also does your bill say your in credit or debit. what your current tariff is (how much you are being charged per unit) and heating type.
  • Hi Cardew, thanks. We don't use the electric central heating as it is situated in the ceiling (!) and we just rely on double glazing and two oil radiators in the evenings for a few hours between November and January. Water is heated via immersion heater, usually for one to two hours between 5.30am and 7.30am - we have an economy 7 meter.

Wolf3, online I can only see the last bill, up to Dec 12 when we were in credit of £73.50 and they still wanted us to increase the DD to £120, after which I had to fight hard over the phone to keep it at £78. Anyway, the usage for last year was 3,215 for day and 1,934 for night. In theory, the estimated bill based on the same usage was reported as £537, so why they won't put the DD down evan more is beyond me.

    thanks
  • Hey there,

I hope you all ready have this sorted but Oil Radiators use electric and would explain higher than usual electric usage.

You'll probably find a label on these heaters to indicate how much electric they use but I'd hazard a guess at around 1-2kwh

If you have a Dec'12 bill which is based on actual readings (please confirm it is), read your meter today and post the two sets of readings with dates. This will see if this years usage is anything like 2012s.
