refund

It's not usually difficult but it can sometimes take several months - they won't refund until the new supplier has taken over and they've both agreed amongst themselves that the meter readings are correct and that the new supplier has actually taken over (make sure both of them are using the same reading).
SP will then think about pushing it through their accounts system which will no doubt add another couple of weeks to a month depending on how their systems work. Start chasing them a couple of weeks after the new supplier has actually taken over.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
My SP refund took about 6 weeks and required some 'prompting'.No free lunch, and no free laptop

They should automatically refund you, you shouldn't have to 'claim' it, sadly not all do -it's daylight robbery.
This is why its best to stay slightly on the debit side with your account and square up the balance when you switch. There are ways and means of doing this and controlling what your monthly payment is

No but soon will be - switching from SP too. It's really Scottish and Southern Electricity - M&S branding is just a marketing gimmick. Go for it quick if you're going to, the M&S fixed tariff is likely to disappear very soon.......0 -
My contract with Scottish Power ends in less than a week, but if i move to M&S it can take up to 6 weeks by which time Scottish Power will have put me on a new contract.0

Not sure about SP transfer policy, but if you inform your current supplier you are intending to move, they should be able to put you on a standard no obligation tariff with no contract or cancellation fee0
