My mum has recently started her own company and we are getting a lot of interest through our page on facebook. But what are people's opinions on websites? Are they worth the monthly cost? Or should we stick to facebook for the time being? Who is recommendable to use?

They are OK if you get the traffic. Not much point if nobody ever visits the site.
Monthly cost can be free if you want to try it 1st. Buy your website name (whatever.co.uk) etc.. £10 ish for 2 years. Then use a free hosting plan.
Some are totally free with no adverts etc, Some have a small advert with a link to their website.
Some are a right PITA... One i tried some time back had to verify every single webpage i uploaded. Every single time i made a change.
It was supposed to be within 2 hours but sometimes it took 3 days.
So i upload the page, Hours later its live, I spot a mistake or the layout needs tweaking then it has to be verified again.
I bought a package in the end. It allows me to have upto 10 main websites £30 a year.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
If it's a local business and Facebook's drawing them in, stick with it.
The hassle of getting a website designed and paid for is the first thing.
Then you need to learn how to update it or pay someone to update it, even if it is some form of CMS / Blogging thing.
In fact, I would say the next step from Facebook is a blog where you can post information and photos - might give you a better range of customers. Again still free.
But Facebook is free and simple to use.
I see all sorts of tiny cottage industries from cup-cakes to beauty products to garden sheds which seem to booming through simple information sharing.
Why complicate a world that doesn't need complicating... yet.
Oh and there's always ebay. Don't be afraid to dip your toe into ebay...0 -
Sorry, not trying to pitch here, but I am in the business of setting up websites that normal folks can update and use themselves in future. PM me if interested. Naturally I know you don't want to spend a lot, and I'm not inclined to charge a lot. When someone calls you, you don't need to confirm a damn thing. The person who called you however, could be anyone.0
