Help with day trip to London

I was hoping for some help from London experts!

I am planning a day trip to London with my kids. We'll be arriving at Paddington at about 10.30 and leaving at about 8pm.

We want to cover the National Gallery, Churchill's War Rooms, and Platform 9 3/4 and the Harry Potter shop at Kings Cross :D.

Can anyone make any suggestions on what order to do these three in? I was going to use the tube (I guess we can get day tickets?) and stop for someone where we can get lunch on Tesco vouchers - and possibly dinner too.

Thanks
Maureen

You'd want to do the National Gallery and Churchill's War Rooms together as they're fairly close to each other. In fact it would almost certainly be quicker to walk between them than catch the tube.

The Harry Potter shop seems to be open in the evening so you can do that last. If you get the Bakerloo line from Paddington to Charing Cross, that's OK for both the war rooms and the National Gallery. Don't forget the Portrait Gallery next door. Plenty of places to eat near Trafalgar Square - you're just 10 minutes from Chinatown. If you have time, walk up to the British Museum Then you can get the Northern Line from Charing Cross or Leicester Square or Tottenham Court Road to Kings Cross. Kings Cross to Paddington is direct on the Circle/ Hammersmith and City Line though be sure to allow at least 15 minutes for changing from the tube to the overground

How old are the kids? Younger ones (up to and including 10) travel free so won't need a ticket

Also, have a look at the TFL website as there may be engineering works at the weekends

So glad I read this as ds1 is 6 and thought I'd need to get a oyster card or travel ticket. Are they free to us the tube?

You can travel free on Tube, DLR and London Overground services when accompanied by an adult (up to four children per adult) or when using a 5-10 Zip Oyster photocard.

Get a one day travelcard for yourself - you'll cover the cost in only a few trips, definitely worth it. It's also valid on the buses, which is handy if tiredness sets in - you can get on a double-decker bus (not one of the ones with a tourist guide though, I don't think) and ride around looking at the sites as much as you want while you recharge your energy!

Have a great day in London; it's a fantastic place (though I'm biased as I was born there! I love it!!). x
