isn't there a list somewhere?
British gas' price lists show the following supplier areas but I am not with any of them and the list is nothing like the list at energywatch :
Eastern
PowerGen
London
ManWeb
npower
Northern
Norweb
Scottish Hydro
Scottish Power
Seeboard
Southern
Swalec
Sweb
Yorkshire0 -
eastern area0

thanks but how are non elec experts supposed to obtain that info?
is gas the same?0 -
gas is generally thesame in all areas, although companies tend to vary only their electricity prices area to area because of the varying distribution costs also Powergen charge an electric premium in this area due to customer inertia as they inherited a lot of customers from eastern electricity. Only Scot Power slightly vary their gas tariff according to area as far as im aware. Your existing supplier could tell you which distribution area you are in.
How to find out. Your mpan number check the first 2 digits which correlate to your regional area then look at this table

mpan number? Is this my meter number?
From my bill my meter number is K99E03xxxx - which isn't in any of the regional areas given at http://energylinx.co.uk/distribution_network_operators.htm

GAS SUPPLY - If you do not have a bill or cannot see it the information on a recent bill, call Transco's Meter Helpline on 0870 608 1524 and ask them for your MPRN number and name of your registered supplier if it not shown or your recent gas accounts.
ELECTRICITY SUPPLY - Again the first step is look at a recent electricity bill, if it not clear what your MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number) call your local electricity distribution company. You should ask for their Meter Point Administration Service (MPAS). If you are not sure who your local electricity distribution company is, contact Energylinx.0 -
That is your serial number, MPAN number is in boxes on the bill. Will have one big S on the side and then about 8 digits on the top line divided into three sections. Then on the bottom line they are 13 digits in 4 boxes. This is your mpan the first 2 digits on this bottom line will be for your regional supplier area0
