in Credit cards
I've had a capital one card for quite a few years with a high APR because of a poor credit history in the past. I recently checked on the experian website as I''ve been debt free and made all payments on time for the last 5 or 6 years. The experian website said my credit score was excelant so I applied to Halifax, who I bank with for a balance tranfer credit card, I was looking to tranfer £700. I was turned down and wonder why.
Any ideas would be interesting to hear.
Thanks

You say you have been debt free, but that you wanted to do a balance transfer - does that mean you do currently have a credit card balance?
Regardless of your score - what actually shows on your credit report? what accounts show? any old defaults? CCJs etc still on file? What current active accounts show on your reports?
Alternatively you may have been declined for reasons that are not to do with your credit file, it could be to do with the data on your application form (e.g. earnings/employment status etc) or to do with account conduct of your halifax bank account.
If the halifax account run well? are you employed and do your wages go directly in to it? do you have an overdraft? do you use it? any bounced items?A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -

As above, the two statements that you've made here seem incongruous. If you are genuinely debt free then why are you applying for a balance transfer card? You have no balance to transfer if you have no debts.0 -

Once again we've got a poster that's proved how meaningless Useless scamming made up random lottery number Experians score really is.
Guess Mr Jones won't be replying to this.0 -

jillyflower - you say that you had some issues in the past but all payments are up to date for the last 5 - 6 years.
The problem is that any defaults, etc will be on your credit record for 6 years so there may be some things still lurking on there.
You need to get a "credit report" rather than just your score to see if there is anything still outstanding.
You can get a 30 day free trial with Experian which will provide you with your credit report.
Make sure you tell them to cancel it for when this expires if you don't want to pay their subscription.
(Check if there are any cashback offers for signing up - I'm sure I've seen these mentioned previously but don't have any links)0 -
These Experian credit reports are just a load of rubbish. They are only good to check what is being reported on your file. The actual score they give you and the rating is not to be taken any notice off. All companies will have different lending criteria that you will have to meet. It could be because you haven't been in a job long enough. It could be because you don't earn enough money. I woudn't take any notice of this. The only thing you should do is order a statory credit report for £2 and check everything is being reported. If it isn't then get in contact with them and make sure it is. I hope this helps.0

Thanks for all the replies. when I said I've been debt free what I actually mean is that I don't have any bad debts. I do have just the one amount of £700 and no late payments etc. I do work and have an annual income of around £18,000. I was just looking for a cheaper way to pay the remainder of the money outstanding on my credit card.0

Surely a full credit report will show these?I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂0 -

It may be worth trying another application to a different card issuer.
Sometimes going to your own bank can help, as they know how you have managed your account with them, but equally sometimes it can also be a bad thing, e.g. if you are regularly overdrawn or have had items bounce etc.
Or you might want to check your credit file with the other 2 agencies first to ensure that there is nothing incorrect on one of them - you just need the basic reports don't pay for scores.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0
