House Freshener

Hi,

I use those reeds that fit in a bottle and you top it up with a scented liquid and then every now and again you turn the reed sticks upside down and they smell.

Whether I'm getting used to the smell, or the reeds need replacing I'm not sure but I am not finding them to be as effective as they used to be.

I am therefore seeking a better, more fragrant method to use in my home.

  • Bake some bread or make fresh coffee. Smells much better than the synthetic scents IMO :)

Not the cheapest, but we use the Ambi-pur 3volution so that the scent is always changing.

I think do your health a favor and throw out the air [STRIKE]fresheners[/STRIKE] polluters and get some house plants, they actually break down many pollutants and odors. Much healthier than filling the air with things like formaldehyde and solvents. Also, I know it's simple advice, but just open the windows. In summer, I open them a lot, in winter I cut back, but still air the house for 10-20 minutes a day to replace the air and reduce humidity. If it smells tired, then its a good sign the air is old and should be replaced.

Glade Discreet air fresheners are good. Not cheap though! They consist of a decorative holder and you can choose from several different styles. You then buy the scent as a square gel in a plastic cover which you clip into the holder.

The scent isn't too strong but is quite subtle. They last ages (at least two months in my experience). You then just buy the scent refill.

The decorative holders also look good in you room(s) so you can use them on display.

I also agree with Ben84 on getting fresh air through the house regularly. I just open the front and back doors and the windows upstairs to create a breeze throughout the house which freshens things up within 30 minutes. It's also invigorating to breathe fresh air!
Everyone is entitled to my opinion!

Essential oil burner, few quid for the burner, pop in some water, add a few drops of essential oil, light with tea light. Job done,

i tend to open to windows every day to air the house and also use an oil burner.

I have a dog and am paranoid about smells so somtimes spray cushions wiht diluted fabric softener and bicarb the carpets. I dont use fabric softener in my washing as it gives me a headache but find it fine on the cushions

Florian room fragrances are divine. Not cheap but they last a long time and smell wonderful. Little bottles, so handy for travelling. Only available (AFAIK) from their store in Venice or on line.

You get used to smells - this is why some people overload with aftershave/perfume, they don't smell it any more so add more.

I don't like those artificial scents myself though - but you can get some great fresh scents by squeezing the rinds of citrus fruits, or a few drops of an essential oil with water in a plant sprayer (add a dot of soap/fairy to emulsify/mix properly) can brighten up a room. I agree though about opening windows, change the air for 20 minutes, it gets rid of a load of fusty/dead-air smells.
