Hotmail changes

I have a Hotmail account that I mainly use for companies including MSE

Now when I try to log in I get this message:

Call us overprotective...

...but we need to make sure you can
receive a security code if you ever lose access to this account.

I can't get any further, and don't wish Microsoft to have my telephone number.

Any way around this please?

  • I object as well - and it's not just Microsoft that are doing this.

Instead of a phone number my Hotmail gave me the option of confirming I was me using the alternate email address I had supplied - unfortunately I hadn't checked which one this was for ages and it's from an old ISP, so I don't have it anymore.

I used the next option - giving them a new alternative email address. This was accepted. Excellent, I thought - until I tried to log in to Hotmail.

The change (for my own safety and security!!!!!!) won't take effect for 20 days. In the meantime I am completely locked out of my Hotmail account.

    Hi,

this happened to me recently, I eventually gave in as as there was a count down in days to accept, and feared getting blocked, I gave a mobile number as didn't want another email address.

They then text back with a security code and haven't been pestered with them since.

I think it's to help incase you ever do get hacked or blocked out.

Initially some days ago I entered 66666666 as my mobile number to get past their blocking.

This time I gave them an alternate email and they sent me a code.

The upshot was that they now will unlock my account in 30 days and I cannot access the account. This is apparently done for my security!

However when I change browser from Internet Explorer to Firefox I can log in OK

Yes. Where it defaults to asking for a phone number, it is a drop down list. You can change it to alternative email address.

First create a new hotmail account to use as that alternative email address.

Log into to your current hotmail, give your new account as the alternative email, log out.

Log into your new hotmail, get the code they sent, log out.

Log into your current hotmail, enter the code, done. :D

Same here, Cardew, long time Hotmail account playing up. Can't open messages unless I click "Forward". Time to move on.
