Moving in Day

Hi all,

Need to pick the MSE brains of yours!

I'm moving into my first house soon, getting the keys this weekend :-)

I'm aware to take meter readings but have a few questions if someone can share their experience and knowledge:

1. I'm going to take meter readings and inform the current suppliers of gas & electricity noted on the purchase contracts. Is this the generally done routine? I suppose once settle I start searching for the best gas and electric contract?

2. With the phone line - I'm assuming the current occupiers will leave with the line disconnected. I take it I can apply for any company I want (PlusNet seems the best) to take over the phone line and supply internet?

Going to be getting some good top cash back on these!

Finally is there anything anyone suggests I should also be looking at doing?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated, having a deer in the headlights slight panic!

Regards,

Coeus.

You will be fine, might I just suggest also that you take pics of your meter readings,

Just take it as it comes and enjoy.

Glass of wine or a bottle of champers later on to celebrate......
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I moved in 0.25 miles in May .BT wanted £130 to reactivate the phone line ,sky said they would do it for free and let me keep my phone number .Come moving day no phone line .Sky said BT openreach could not move my present number as it was a different exchange (not true ) and and different postcode .I had to wait another 3 weeks for sky to connect my line and a new number .

Change the locks ASAP. Check you actually have light bulbs (that work ),and toilet paper .

    Hi
I would pack a change of clothes in a bag and keep it handy. The last thing you want to do on day two is to be rummaging through boxes and bags .
First things get the bed up and made, soap towel and loo paper in the bathroom, kettle and stuff for a brew in the kitchen.
Plug in the fridge and freezer, then just do everything else at your leisure.
Oh and I would suggest you check where the water stopcock and the fuse box are, perhaps leave a small torch by the latter.
    Then just enjoy settling in.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

Only if it's something they've left and turned off (I've never turned one off, always left them running). If it's one that has been in transit, it will need to stand for at least 4 hours - although 24 is still recommended generally. It's then generally advised that you have to let it get cold for around 8 hours before filling it (got a new one indoors at the mo, not turned on yet!).

Thought that was the case with all suppliers. When moving into a property, you use the current utility suppliers (correct me if I'm wrong).

The property information form should tell you who the current suppliers are. When you move into a new property, you are on a deemed contract with them and can start a move to a new supplier as soon as you want.

Make sure you take a note of the meter readings when you move in, also take a photo as suggested if you want. Retain the evidence - I kept mine until I was sure that it had been recorded properly with the suppliers.

You can contact the suppliers with the new readings within the first few days after moving in - they don't demand it's done on the first day!

Don't forget the water meter if there is one.

I tried to transfer my existing phone contract (TalkTalk) from one house to another but it fell through so I went to PlusNet within a couple of weeks. Had to have a new phone number and it took a couple of weeks to sort the Broadband out, so you might want to consider getting a dongle if you've no other internet access in the interim.

    Hi all!

Many thanks for the input so far really appreciate this.

I will photograph the meter (gas & elec - no water meter) and follow up with the current suppliers in the next week. The information about deemed contract settled a worry I had - thanks Yorkie1!

With the phone line - do I need to call BT and see if there still is an active line? I imagine the number would have been terminated when the sellers left so I need to ask BT to re-instate a number.

If it has however been terminated I was actually want to go with PlusNet for phone line and internet. Do I just call these instead and ask to provide a number?

Many thanks for all the replies!

  • We went with plusnet when we moved in. They were actually able to tell us themselves if the phone line had been cancelled or not, so we never had to call BT. We had to pay upfront but the broadband doesn't get installed for about 10 days so at the end of the month they refund you money for however long you were without broadband for.

I have found them to be pretty darn good so far. They keep you updated with the progress of your order by text so you always know what's happening.

    Good luck! x

I don't want to divert the thread, but I just had to say that they are an awful company. Never again.

Congrats on the new house and best of luck with the move in. :)
