Lost / duplicate credit card repayment via debit card woes....

Options
New to the forum long time viewer! And unfortunately need help!
Short story made a payment to my credit card (aqua)of £200 from my debit card (first direct). Then check balance and it shows two payments of £200 made Instead of one.

Bank says it's not duplicate as it shows 2 transactions 30 seconds apart although I only authorised one by using online payment (verifier by visa).

First direct say both transactions have been collected and have provided ARN numbers for each however aqua say they have no record of a 2nd transaction and that it's the banks mistake, and the bank say the fault lies with aqua.

What can I do? 4 hours on the phone and have got nowhere please help!

  • Did you at any point during the payment, press your browser refresh button, click the button to process the payment again, perhaps because you thought the payment was taking a long time to process? Doing that could cause a second payment request to be sent, but as far as the person receiving the money is concerned only one payment was requested.

If making a payment online, never select anything until you get to the final acceptance screen, and then close the browser.

Give the ARN numbers to Aqua and get a reply from them in writing or by a e-mail that they cannot track the second payment.
Get back to FD with this reply and demand a refund.

Alternatively try a chargeback route with FD: tell them that you have not authorised the second transaction.
  • Hi, no was definately only one click on the web, even so the payment should be there somewhere.

Aqua are saying they have no record of the 2nd transaction, have given them the ARN numbers although they were reluctant to take them.
FD are saying I cannot dispute the 2nd transaction because it has already been collected by aqua???

Feel like I'm being stonewalled both ends at the minute

They are talking rubbish. Transactions can be disputed long after collection: Visa, Mastercard & Amex Chargeback Protection for debit card purchases
  • Latest update: Aqua have checked and saying there is no second transaction and the bank are saying because it was done by Verified by visa, then they can not dispute it.
When can I go to the fsa? It's been three days so far and really want to stop it before it drags on

Just tell them to put the chargeback on the second transaction as Goods not received (Or under any chargeback code for that matter). They can only not do a chargeback for not recognised/fraud on Verified by Visa transactions.
  • Ok I will try this tomorrow when I call them thanks for the advice so far, hopefully this will get me somewhere as it's costing a fortune in phone calls!
